Traditionally, women have always been great consumers of culture. This fact, however, hides great gender inequalities around this sector and that it is difficult for them to come to light. The main reason is that women are present in the field of culture, but always from a position of relegation from decision-making and creative positions.
It is for this reason and many more, that together with the CoNCA (National Council for Culture and the Arts), we will work together with an exhaustive diagnosis of what is the situation of parity in the places of leadership of culture and the arts in Catalonia. In order to carry out a good analysis of the sector, we will also have the participation of various cultural associations and different feminist entities. The main objective was to create a database that would function as a basic tool that would allow the CoNCA to claim public policies to favor the balance between women and men in decision-making positions in the Catalan cultural sector.
Methodology
The steps followed by the creation of this database were as follows:
- Definition of what is leadership or what are decision-making positions in the cultural sector and establish key concepts to talk about equality between women and men.
- Establishment of the different criteria to determine the places of leadership or decision-making in the Catalan cultural sectors.
- Collection of data on the people who occupy these positions identified as leadership or decision-making of Catalan culture in order to determine parity in Catalan culture.
- Creation of an instrument that can be reviewed periodically to have updated data that facilitate the analysis of the evolution of equality in places of cultural leadership.
Finally, a final report was drafted which included the situation of women and men in leadership or decision-making positions in terms of parity in Catalan culture during the year 2021.
