Elaboration of the guide against gender-based violence in Arenys de Mar

Gender-based violence is a structural violence, normalised over many years, which is not always easy to detect and address. The consequences of male violence are devastating, both for the women who suffer it and for their environment and the community. For this reason, the municipal team of Arenys de Mar, aware of the importance of having a good guide for prevention and awareness of male violence in the municipality, decided to expand and update the contents and services that were shown in the previous Guide of support and services for women in a situation of gender based violence.

Objectives

Broadly speaking, the new guide against gender based violence was designed to be a useful tool for all citizens to be able to identify and deal with different manifestations of gender violence. More specifically, the objectives achieved with this guide are as follows:

  1. To raise awareness and sensitise the population: it gives the opportunity to raise awareness among citizens about what gender based violence is by exposing the different manifestations, consequences and the importance of preventing it.
  2. To inform in a comprehensive way: it provides detailed information on the different types of male violence, such as physical, sexual, psychological, economic… violence. In addition, it also talks about other forms of male violence such as digital violence or obstetric violence. All these definitions have been accompanied by examples to give shape to the typologies of male violence.
  3. Prevention and self-care: it offers strategies and practical advice to prevent gender based violence, promoting self-awareness and self-care both for possible victims and for witnesses or people close to them.
  4. Disseminate the resources and services available: group together in a single document all the information on the resources and services available in the municipality.
